It all started in 2020..
Viral Records Australia was founded during the first wave of the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic in response to the challenges and opportunities faced by today’s recording artists.
Digital distribution has opened the world to creators and there is now more independent music being released than ever before. However, it's getting harder to be heard over all the noise.
This abundance also brings with it a sense of devaluation as the days of fans buying and absorbing an album fade into memory.
For a number of years, live music thrived as a result with more artists taking to the stage to perform for new audiences who have discovered their music and for a while, ticket and merch sales filled the financial gap left by the death of records sales.
But all it took was a particularly successful micro-organism for music venues to fall silent across the globe.
Suddenly, recorded music as invaluable again and this was the inspiration behind our inception; To find the Aussie alt artists working in isolation and channel their music to receptive ears around the globe.
While the world is recovering from the pandemic, our mission remains the same.
Digging deep into the petrie dish of Australia’s alternative underground, we continue to find the creatives that have cultured there, bring their music to the surface and deliver it to like-minded audiences around the world.
We’re dedicated to the dark and dirty, the wonderfully weird, the genre-benders who won’t be placed in a pigeonhole.
We were founded and are operated by musos and music lovers. We’ve been there, front and centre, arms in the air, sweat-soaked and shouting for an encore. We’ve felt the rush of playing to a responsive room, but we’ve also known the reality of lugging gear for hours only to play to turned backs and poker machines.
Yes, the world has changed and nothing seems normal anymore.
But normal was never our style anyway.
We may be microscopic, but we are growing.
